Florida Panther defenseman Mike Weaver has been given a two year contract extension totaling $1.8 million per Cap Geek. Weaver has been one of the most consistent defenders for the Panthers not only this season, but last season as well, and has helped with the maturation of players like Jason Garrison and Dmitry Kulikov. In the mold of what Dale Tallon loves in a hockey player this is what Tallon had to say this morning:
“Mike is a high-character, hard-working defenseman who we are glad to have re-signed,” said Tallon. “He is a responsible player, who has proven to play an integral role on our penalty kill. We look forward to his continued contributions to our organization.”
The signing leaves Keaton Ellerby, Dmitry Kulikov and Jason Garrison as the defensemen not signed beyond this season. Ellerby and Kulikov are restricted free agents after this season, while Garrison is an unrestricted free agent.
Here’s the official announcement from the Florida Panthers.
While part of me is surprised, there’s also a bigger part of me that says this makes sense, as Weaver’s stability, character and strong work ethic will continue to benefit the younger Panther defenceman. While he may be smaller than most blue liners, he plays a big game.
