Panthers Toughen Up. Acquire Krys Barch From Stars

The Florida Panthers and the Dallas Stars made a minor trade today, which could end up having a major effect.  I’ve been softly preaching for a little more toughness and today Dale Tallon acquired right winger Krys Barch and a sixth round draft pick in 2012 from the Dallas Stars in exchange for Jake Hauswirth and the Panthers fifth round pick in 2012.

Barch is 31 years old and is listed at 6′ 1′ 237 lbs. was originally drafted in the fourth round in 1998 by the Washington Capitals, has played in 263 NHL games, scoring 10 goals to go along with 26 assists. He’s accumulated 578 penalty minutes while playing all his NHL games with the Stars.  Barch will bring the “true” element of toughness to the Florida Panthers.  A role that was to be assumed primarily by Matt Bradley, however Bradley has been injured and is recovering from an upper body injury.  In 10 games this season Barch has no points and 23 penalty minutes to ago along with 17 hits.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about Barch so far, and I’m certain that his character and his attitude have been checked out by Dale Tallon and his staff to ensure that Barch fits in with the system here in Florida.  While Barch is known now in the NHL for his tough guy image, he does have some ability which will make him a useful player on the fourth line, giving the Panthers a “real” fourth line that can be used to bang bodies, energize the team, and pot the unexpected goal here and there.

Hauswirth you may recall was acquired from Washington last season in the deal that saw the Panthers send defenceman Dennis Wideman to the Capitals as part of the “purging” of the roster last spring.  Jake has 12 points in 16 games while playing for the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the CHL.  Basically Tallon has acquired a NHL player for a CHL player and swaped draft picks.  Good deal if you ask me, as Barch is expected to play tomorrow night when the Panthers take on the Boston Bruins in a highly anticipated Eastern Conference match.

Here’s a little “dance” between Krys and Cam Janssen from this past January that will give you a taste of Mr. Barch and his toughness:
