Leave It To Weaver

Mike Weaver may not be the tallest or biggest man on the ice, but he surely gets the job done despite that fact. Mike Weaver has played exceptional hockey this season, and although he may not look like a hockey player, once he laces up those skates, size doesn’t matter to him.

Mike Weaver came to the Florida Panthers last season and played in all 82 games which was the first time in his career where he has played an entire season. Although he didn’t score a much, it was a career year for him as he tallied the most assists last season than ever before in his career (11). Weaver and Jason Garrison were the two most consistent defenders the Florida Panthers had last season on the blueline.   You could even say they were the most reliable pair of defenders that the Panthers had on the blueline.

Before coming to Florida, Weaver spent seasons in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Vancouver and St. Louis.

This season Weaver has been seen partnered with Dmitry Kulikov so far and I don’t think Weaver seems to mind, and it seems to work for the young Kulikov as well. Weaver is certainly a player that isn’t afraid to get physical with the bigger and stronger players, and for most of their shifts Weaver along with Kulikov are battling against the opposing teams’ top line.

With what I like to call the “Big 6″ (Versteeg, Weiss, Fleischmann, Kulikov, Campbell and Garrison) all seeming to have career years, little guys like Mike Weaver go unnoticed. In 22 games this season Weaver has tallied 8 assists. Before this season his career high was 11, in which he played all 82 games. If he were to remain at this pace, he would end up somewhere in the neighborhood of 29-30 assists, which would shatter his career high and certainly be a huge jump that Florida Panthers need.

Although he doesn’t score goals, he has certainly made up for it by playing the some of the best defense in his career. Weaver certainly is the grittiest and toughest defenseman we have and it shouldn’t go unnoticed.
