Postgame: Philadelphia Flyers Down Florida Panthers

Both teams came into the game with identical records: 8-4-3 (19pts)

Opposition site: Broad Street Buzz

Ilya Bryzgalov  vs  Jose Theodore

The Flyers opened the scoring at 16:10 of the 1st period, when Danny Briere lifted a rebound over Theodore, who had gone down to block the scoring attempt of James Van Riemsdyk. One period, which saw 5 minor penalties and 2 majors for fighting (20 minutes worth of penalties) came to an end: Flyers 1 Panthers 0, with the Panthers outshooting the Flyers 10 to 8.

At 6:50 of the second period, the Flyers increased their lead to 2 goals, after Braydon Coburn tapped one past Theodore. Having won 3 games in 4 starts going into the game, Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, held the Panthers at bay. That was until Evgeni Dadonov, who was just called up from San Antonio (the Panthers AHL affiliate), got the Panthers on the board with a wrist shot that beat Bryzgalov on the stick side. Dadonov had entered the Flyers zone and skated the puck below the left faceoff circle to the right of Bryzgalov. Getting off a quick shot, Dadonov got his first of the year, in his first game of the year (not as a scratch). Flyers 2 Panthers 1 at the end of two periods.

Early in the third period, a Jaromir Jagr hooking penalty put the Panthers on the power play, but a double major for hi-sticking awarded to Maxime Talbot at 3:13; gave the Panthers a 5 on 3 power play. After failing to score on the 5 on 3 advantage, Philadelphia’s Matt Read escaped on a breakaway and was hooked by Jason Garrison, which resulted in a penalty shot. Panthers‘ Alternate Captain Stephen Weiss  was given a game misconduct and a 10 minute misconduct for arguing the ruling. Leaving the Panthers without Weiss for the remainder of the game.

Matt Read somehow found room to slip one past Jose Theodore, for a successful penalty shot on Read‘s first attempt of his career. This goal to make it 3 to 1 in favor of the Flyers, as well as the loss of Stephen Weiss, had a serious effect on the morale of the Panthers. Fighting back, and pulling Theodore for an extra attacker, the Panthers got a goal from Tomas Fleischmann with just under 8 seconds remaining in the game. It wasn’t the Panthers the evening in the end, as the Flyers kept them from scoring in the final seconds.

Flyers 3  Panthers 2
