Florida Panthers Beat Montreal Canadians 2-1, Led By Jacob Markstrom!

In a hostile environment, the Florida Panthers stood tall but the player that stood the tallest was the tallest on the ice. 6’6” 21 year old Jacob Markstrom stops 40 of the 41 Montreal shots in the Florida Panthers 2-1 win.

In the 1st period, the Montreal Canadians lead with 14 shots and the Florida Panthers had 9 shots and Montreal got on the scoreboard first on the power-play. Erik Cole scored on a shot from the point, with the assists going to Max Pacioretty and Raphael Diaz. The Florida Panthers continued to pressure the Canadians and the pressure eventually lead to a power-play opportunity. Tomas Fleischmann managed to squeak one through Montreal goaltender Peter Budaj, with the assist going to Kris Versteeg. The highlight of the first period has to go to Jacob Markstrom, making an amazing save on the penalty kill that was destined for the goal.

Throughout the 2nd period, both goalies took fire at different points throughout the period. In the first couple of minutes Montreal seemed like the more confident team. The Canadians then got into penalty trouble and the Florida Panthers took advantage of it, but failed to beat Peter Budaj. After a scoreless 2nd period, the score remained 1-1. After two periods, Montreal led with 27 shots and Florida with 23 shots.

During the 3rd period both teams were once again firing shots at each other shift after shift. The Florida Panthers got onto the board 5:02 into the 3rd with a precise tip by Scottie Upshall off Dmitry Kulikov’s shot, Tomas Kopecky was also awarded with an assist. The Florida Panthers were then clogging the neutral zone and not allowing Montreal to get into the zone resulting in the Montreal Canadian fans “booing” their home team. Jacob Markstrom stood tall and held his own stopping 40 and shutting the door guiding the Florida Panthers to a 2-1 victory.

With the win, the Florida Panthers move to 5-3 on the season and travel to Ottawa for a showdown Thursday night.
