Around The NHL In 30 Days: A Capital Experience.

On tap today are the Washington Capitals as Taylor Lewis one of the fine writers at Capitals Outsider who is hoping for more than just winning the Southeast Division.  The Capitals who haven’t made too many changes for this coming year, but the one’s they did make just might vault them into the Stanley Cup Finals.  Adding Troy Brouwer, Joel Ward, Jeff Halpern as new forwards the Caps will be grittier, and tougher to play against which is something they’ve been missing.  On defence they added veteran Roman Hamrlik to go along with Mike Green, Dennis Wideman and John Carlson among others.

Here’s Taylor’s opening remarks:

It takes less than a glance at the Capitals’ offense to know Washington is a Cup-contending team. Cup-contending, but not necessarily Cup-winning.

General manager George McPhee’s moves this past summer were made in expectation of changing that, and if everything goes well, he may succeed.

The organization let go of a number of players: Jason Arnott, Matt Bradley, Eric Fehr,Boyd Gordon, Andrew Gordon, Marco Sturm, and less notably, Brian Willsie. Statistically, the seven represent a loss of 78 points (based on last season).

The biggest addition however that the Washington Capitals made is in goal with Tomas Vokoun.  Vokie as we sometimes called him here in South Florida will get a chance to play for a team with a high powered offence, and take some pressure off of him to not have to win games 2-1.  Vokoun has had to play his entire career with teams (Nashville, and Florida) that were offensively challenged and this could be exactly what he needs.  Having signed him to a one year deal, Washington isn’t on the hook for big money ($1.5 million), nor are they stuck with a long term contract.  It will certainly be interesting to see how this shakes out.

You can read the rest of Taylor’s preview here.

Tomorrow and finally on day 30 it’s the Winnipeg Jets!
