We Mourn The Lives Lost...Together

Just as we thought things couldn’t get more tragic during the off season of the NHL,we we began our day yesterday finding out about a plane carrying the players and coaches from the team Lokomotiv of the Kontinental Hockey League crashing shortly after take off.  The fatal accident happened about 4 P.M. Moscow time, as we received word of it here in the states Wednesday morning.

More than 40 players, coaches and staff were on the plane representing the team including four players on their youth team as they headed to their first game of the season in Minsk.  Eight members of the flight crew also lost their lives in what is one of the worst flight tragedies in sports history.

Where this hits a little closer to us here in South Florida is that several former NHL players were on the flight included former Florida Panthers Ruslan Salei, Karlis Skrastins and Alexander Karpotsev.  Other players of note were Pavol Demitra, Josef Vasicek, and Karel Rachunek.  The team was coached by former NHL defenceman Brad McCrimmon who was going to begin his first year as coach after serving as an assistant with the Detroit Red Wings.  The lone Lokomotive player who survived the crash is Alexander Galimov who is in critical condition.  The entire roster is here, and I thank Donny at LitterBox for posting it on his site Wednesday.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families and friends of all the players, staff, other passengers and crew involved in this flight.  A tragedy that runs throughout the world of sports, but has hit the community of hockey very hard.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman issued this statement yesterday:

“Though it occurred thousands of miles away from our home arenas, this tragedy represents a catastrophic loss to the hockey world — including the NHL family, which lost so many fathers, sons, teammates and friends who at one time excelled in our League. Our deepest condolences go to the families and loved ones of all who perished.”

The Florida Panthers issued the following statement:

“The entire Florida Panthers organization is deeply shocked and saddened after learning about today’s plane crash involving the Kontinental Hockey League’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey club, which included the loss of former Florida Panthers Alexander Karpovtsev, Ruslan Salei and Karlis Skrastins. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those families who have lost loved ones in this tragic and unfortunate accident.”
