Two big stories in the NHL Tuesday to give us something to talk about. First, the Tampa Bay Lightning signed RFA Steven Stamkos to a five year $37.5 million dollar contract. A franchise player who is going to be only….get this…26 when THIS deal is over, now ranks in the top 10 of earners in the NHL. Regardless, a very solid deal for both sides, but if Steven maintains his scoring pace, and or gets even slightly better, the next contract will be a big one!
Secondly, as you all know former Panther coach Peter DeBoer is now the new head coach of the New Jersey Devils. This one left me as well as many others scratching our heads, as it seemed as though there were other more qualified bench bosses available. Ken Hitchcock, Guy Carbonneau, Michel Therrien just to name three. Those characters might be considered to have personalities that could be too strong for Lou Lamoreillo, prompting him to go the more junior route with Pete. The boring style that New Jersey is accustomed to playing will more than likely continue. I’m afraid that the only excitement could come from behind the scenes. DeBoer’s inability to get along with certain players will be severely tested in Jersey. Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise will play a big role in DeBoer’s success or failure, but probably not as much as Marty Brodeur. If Pete’s relationship with Marty is anything like his relationship with Tomas Vokoun, Pete won’t survive the contract. One plus if any is that Devils forward David Clarkson should be happy as he played for Pete in juniors. Did DeBoer learn anything while he was here that will help him coach a more talented team? Many nights the Panther players that he had weren’t prepared to play. With more experienced players that shouldn’t be a problem. Then again……..
