Hope you all had a safe and happy 4th of July. It’s a short week which is good, but there is still work to be done here in Sunrise. Specifically I’m talking about the signing of two players that I feel will have an important role on the club. Forward Mike Santorelli is still unsigned. He is a restricted free agent, and was second in scoring on the Panthers last season with 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points. It was his first full season in the NHL, and he proved to get better with more ice time and responsibility. There hasn’t been much if any noise about this signing, but Santorelli sure would look good on the second line with potentially Weiss and either Booth or newcomer Scottie Upshall as his linemates. I’m hoping that he’s not asking for too much money. Realistically no more than $2 million per year for two years is what I’m looking at. I’d settle for a three year deal as well, but we need to make sure that last season wasn’t a fluke.
The second player that we need to get in tow is Erik Gudbranson. The first round pick from last year’s draft will be given a chance to make the club this year, but could still be the odd man out, although I find that hard to believe. What worries me is that we have no idea if the two sides are far apart or if things are close and it’s just about the fine print. Last year Gudbranson wasn’t signed because of his incentives. With Ed Jovanovski here to mentor the younger players, Erik will certainly benefit from his experience. He has all the tools and personally I don’t think going back to juniors will prove anything. All I can say is get it done! Plus Little Miss Rat Trick has her senior prom this coming school year!
