Today’s musical choice is The River by Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band.  It includes a chilling performance by Clarence Clemons at the beginning.

Last night the NHL Awards show took place in Las Vegas honoring the league’s best performers.  The award that caused me my most nervous moment was the Vezina Trophy, which fortunately went to the deserving Tim Thomas. Thank goodness as I didn’t feel like eating another shoe if Roberto Luongo had been voted as the winner for that one.  There were a couple surprises like Nicklas Lidstrom winning the Norris Trophy as the best defenceman.  I thought that Shea Weber should have won.  Ryan Kesler won the Selke Award as the best defensive forward which also caught me by surprise.  I felt that Chicago’s Jonathan Toews should have won that.  The award itself is based on defensive abilities and while Kesler had a solid year, it’s his points that most likely earned him this one.  You can see the entire list of award winners here from NHL.com.

The draft is tomorrow and we here in Florida are waiting to see what the Panthers will do with not only the pick itself, which is the third overall, but will they make a trade?  In the past, players like Olli Jokinen, Keith Ballard and Nathan Horton have been part of deals to either acquire players and or draft picks.  We know that Dale Tallon has something up his sleeve.  What it is, we don’t know.

Players that I feel could be potential trade bait are David Booth, Michal Repik, Rostisav Olesz and unfortunately Tomas Vokoun.  Olesz will be hard to pass off, but with the salary cap increasing, there might be someone willing to take him on as part of a package in hopes that a change of scenery will be good for him.  As for Vokoun, I do not want him to leave, but with the ridiculous contract that Ilya Bryzgalov is going to get from the Flyers, I can’t blame Tomas for wanting to test free agency.

Here’s a breakdown of the voting on the awards.  Booby Lose wasn’t even close, and Uncle Jack got 4 votes for coach of the year.  Really?  Not one Panther was in any category.  This year, that needs to change.  Puck Daddy.
