Position: Defenseman

2010-2011 Statistics: 15 GP, 3 G, 2 A, +4 rating

2011-2012 Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent

Review:

Not much was expected of Clay Wilson when he was signed to his two year deal prior to the 2009-2010 season. And during that season, that’s exactly what he provided. In two games, he didn’t record a point and managed a -5 rating. This season, Wilson played the final 13 games and managed to look somewhat impressive. Coming up from Rochester as a replacement after the trade deadline, Wilson’s ice time grew as the season drew to a close. With each passing game, he showed some nice offensive flair, including a goal in the win against the Chicago Blackhawks, his first in three seasons. He did this while becoming serviceable on the defensive end of the ice.

Final Grade: B Wilson was a nice surprise this season, much the same way Jason Garrison was a season before. Unfortunately, he happens to play at a position that the Panthers are particularly deep at in the organization. If he’s not retained by the Cats, he did himself a favor by playing well to close out the season. He would make a decent third pairing d-man to a more established club, or at the very least, a good injury call up from the minors.
