Final Grade: Bill Thomas

Each day we are going to give you the Final Grade on the Florida Panthers roster. The members here known as The Rat Pack will rotate daily until we have completed our assessment of bodies talent players. Today’s Final Grade Report is on Bill Thomas.

How Acquired: Signed a one year deal as an unrestricted free agent in July 2010.

Position: Right Wing/Center

2010-2011 Statistics: 24 GP, 4G 3A, +1 rating, 6 PIM.

2011-2012 Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent

When Bill Thomas made his Panther debut this season on November 20th against the New York Islanders, it marked the first time he played in the NHL in almost two years. He played 13 games before being placed on waivers on 12/28. He subsequently cleared and returned to Rochester in the American Hockey League before being shuttled there and back from February until the end of the season. In his time in Sunrise, he played ok. In addition to his numbers mentioned above, he did pot two game winning goals and won 59% of his faceoffs. His versatlity came in handy, especially after the trade deadline when injuries and trades made ‘Who’s healthy?’ became a key factor into filling out a lineup on a nightly basis.

Final Grade: C. His grade is partially based on the fact that I had zero expectations on him contributing to this team. He’s not a bad guy to have in the minors to have as an injury replacement with his ability to play center or wing. I don’t know how he factors into the club going forward. Maybe Dale Tallon keeps him around another year while the roster is in transition to play on the bottom two lines but I don’t forsee him being much more than an injury call up from the minors. If his role is more than that, then we’ll know the Panthers still need a talent upgrade.
