The Vancouver Canucks couldn’t maintain their composure last night and the San Jose Sharks made them pay. The Sharks had ten power play opportunities and San Jose connected on three of them. Grabbing a 3-0 lead in the first period also set the tone for the game. Vancouver bulked up their fourth line by adding Alexandre Buldoc and Tanner Glass in the lineup, while San Jose added speed with Jamie McGinn and Andrew Desjardins. It worked.
Patrick Marleau who has played like a man possesed since he was called out by Jeremy Roenick for his gutless performance against Detroit scored twice in the first period. Antti Niemi kept the door closed just enough to preserver the win for the Sharks, as the series now stands at 2-1 Vancouver. Game four is Sunday afternoon. Joe Thornton added three assists and Dan Boyle added a goal that went thru Bobby Lou’s five hole. After which he fell back as though he was shot in the gut. The Sharks were ready for this game as they came right at Vancouver, who maybe wasn’t expecting the mad rush at the start.
Transcripts after the jump.
Here are the post game remarks from Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Antti Niemi.
Vancouver lost two defencemen in the game as Christian Erhoff and Aaron Rome left the game with injuries. Rome was hit from behind by McGinn and both will be evaluated further to see if they will play on Sunday. Vancouver had a chance to come back in the third after the five minute boarding penalty was given to McGinn. Kevin Bieksa scored for the Canucks, but it was too little too late.
This win gives the Sharks new life, and once again places some doubt in Vancouver’s mind. Has each team learned something this post season? We’ll see. There’s four games left and while the Sharks need to win three of the four, this series is far from over. If San Jose’s big guns can continue to show up, and Vancouvers’ go into a shell, it’s anyone’s guess as to what may happen.
Chokeapalooza resumes Sunday.
