Final Grade: David Booth

icehockey.wiki.com

Each day we are going to give you the Final Grade on the Florida Panthers roster. The members here known as The Rat Pack will rotate daily until we have completed our assessment of bodies talent players. Today’s Final Grade Report is on David Booth

Position: Left Wing

2010-2011 Stats: 23 G, 17 A, -31 rating

Grade: B-

When he signed his current six year contract following the 2008-2009 season, Booth looked like a rising star in the league, and more importantly, he was coming off a 60 point season (31 goals) for the Florida Panthers. Then came a devastating hit from Philadelphia’s Mike Richards that gave Booth his first of two concussions … He missed 53 total games due to the injuries.

This year was a comeback year for Booth, earning him a nomination for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy which is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. Though he didn’t get back up to 31 goals…the team around him wasn’t exactly prime assistance.

More After the Jump

David brings a passion to the ice when he gets to play his game, speeding quickly up the wing it is common for fans to shout Boooooth… of course giving them a chance to explain they are not boooing they are boooTHing… He is for sure a fan favorite and if he isn’t around next year there will be some sad fans with “Mrs. Booth” jerseys.

According to Capgeek, Booth’s cap hit is $4.25 million. I think next season is a big one for Booth and he’ll be expected to contribute enough to justify his cap hit. Otherwise, he may be used as trade bait for a veteran center or more draft picks.

In the end: I expect Booth to be back next season and placed on the top two lines…I doubt there are many teams willing to take on his salary in a trade scenario, and he does contribute offensively. What Booth will need to do though is continue to improve his game, last year he worked on skating in the offseason and on shootouts…this year he needs to work on going to the net to score those dirty goals the Panthers so desperately need.
