Vokoun let in the only goal of the game in at 7:49 of the third period in the 1-0 loss. The previous two periods saw the Czech netminder in fine form, making 26 saves in that time, some of them spectacular. When an unmarked Brandon Dubinsky took a feed from Ryan Callahan in front of the net and buried it for the Blue Shirts, you got the sense that there would be no more scoring. And that’s just how the rest of the game went, despite a flurry of Panther chances in the final thirty seconds of the game.
Once again, it was a reshuffled Panther lineup on the ice, and it showed as they were outshot 33-22 on the night. Out of the lineup was Stephen Weiss (lower body injury), who has been playing well as of late. Back in the lineup were Jack Skille and Shawn Matthias after long layoffs from injury. It probably wouldn’t have mattered too much who was in there as Lundqvist continued his hot play, collecting his league leading 10th shutout as the Rangers extended their winning streak to five. But the Cats never really seemed to have too much going on offensively. The 22 shots taken looks bad on paper, but it looks even worse when you consider the team only had 14 through two periods. And a few of those eight third period shots came with under a minute left.
Former Panther captain Bryan McCabe faced his old mates for the first time. He wasn’t much of a factor in his 15 minutes of ice time.
Not much else to say about this one. It’s more of what we’ve seen most of this season. Pretty good effort, good goaltending, not much offense leading to a one goal loss.
Quick turnaround for the Cats as they’ll be in Chicago tomorrow facing the Blackhawks. Chicago might be a little bit fired up for this one with the last meeting of these two teams still fresh in their mind. Preview will be up around 4pm.
