What are we looking for? Rule changes? Equipment changes? Players showing more respect or even better judgement? Harder and or tougher suspensions and fines? It remains to be seen, but hopefully the road to making this game safer starts this week.
Yesterday the General Manager’s meetings began in Boca Raton, FL. I am still waiting for my invation so I can attend, but something tells me it’s not coming. Anyway, the day started off and revolved around what else? Head Shots! And rightly so. An issue that must be addressed immediately. With 10% of the players suffering concussions, the league and the players must realize that this cannot go on forever without some sort of tweak to the system, and rules.
A five step program is going to be installed that will be lead by former NHL forward Branden Shannahan. For more on how this program will unfold go to the TSN story here. Regardless of how this ends up going forward the bottom line is that whatever rules are put in place, they will mean absolutely nothing unless they are enforced. If referees can call all the interference, and phantom tripping and hooking calls, they ought to be able to be able to call penalties on shots to the head. In addition, the suspensions need to be enforced as well. I’m hoping that the groundwork that has been laid is more than just talk to appease. Do something about this now. Links after the jump.
