Semin Shoots Caps To The Top.

Alexander Semin’s overtime goal just 48 seconds into overtime catapulted the Washington Capitals into first place in the Southeast Division, allowing them to pass the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Semin skated down the far wall with the puck, made a pass to Marcus Johansson, who quickly gave it back to Semin and he ripped a one time past Florida Panther goaltender Scott Clemmensen for the win.  It was Washington’s fourth victory in a row.  Nicklas Backstrom and Boyd Gordon also scored for the Caps as they have their longest winning streak since November 24th to December 1st.

Michael Neuvirth was superb in goal for Washington stopping 32 shots, some of which were of the spectacular variety as he continues to set the rookie goaltender win mark for the Caps.  He’s now at 22 for the season.

Dennis Wideman played his first game against Florida since the Monday trade.  Wideman played just over 22 minutes, had a couple shots on goal and was a plus 2.  Making him a minus 23 for the season.

The Panthers mean while put up a fight, but could not finish.  The story of the season as goal scoring continues to be a problem that hopefully gets fixed in the summer. Panther goals were scored by Bill Thomas and David Booth.  Booth’s goal tied the game with 2:36 left in the third period as the Panthers were on a two man advantage.  Hoping to ride that momentum to a victory, but that was not to be the case.

I wouldn’t say that Washington was that much more dominant, but when you can’t score and can’t finish, your problems will continue.  Staying with teams is something that the panthers have done all season.  Probably have only 5-6 games all year that you can say they were over matched or blown out.  But as we’ve said all along, there’s not column for effort.

Here’s the TSN boxscore.
