As I mentioned earlier today, I didn’t watch and I didn’t listen to yesterday’s game. The updates that came to my phone from the various sources however told me everything I needed to know. I was therefore glad not to have been put through the agony of yesterday’s defeat while in front of a TV.
Matt Moulson another one of those players that teams except us seem to find, was the hero with a hat trick for the Islanders that pretty much puts the Panthers on the outside looking in regarding the post season. This will be the 10th consecutive year that Florida will be golfing early. While they aren’t mathematically eliminated, the effort or should I say lack of effort that was displayed yesterday pretty much assures them of not making it.
The Florida Panthers have now lost 12 of their last 16, while the New York Islanders are 8-3-0 in their last 11 games. Who’s trying to make the post season? Losses like this are tough to take and at a time like this during the season where you expect to see the desperation, it apparently wasn’t there. Al Montoya a former number one pick of the New York Rangers, who has bounced around made 20 saves in goal for New York. Mike Santorelli scored the lone goal for the Panthers in the third period on the power play, making the final score 5-1.
The Panthers didn’t start out well. A disease that has plagued them for more than just this season. You can read into that whatever you like, but it’s the truth. They have failed on many occasions to have that jump at the beginning of a game where they take control, and get either some quick hits and or a quick few scoring chances. Playing on their heels for most of some games, then to finally wake up and realize that there’s a game going on is a horrible habit.
One that must change. It’s a top down analysis, and head coach Peter DeBoer wasn’t happy with the effort from all 20 who dressed yesterday. It wasn’t the first time, but the clock is ticking. It needs to be the last. The team can no longer suffer these mental lapses, or lack of preparation.
The trade deadline is February 28th. Changes need to be made. We have a few good pieces, but in the long run, not enough to take the next step.
It’s time to back up the truck.
