Panther’s Roster: Michael Frolik

Michael Frolik

So the Trade Deadline is February 28th at 3PM EST. What we’re going everyday until then is do an honest roster break down of the current roster for the month of February. Today, we look at Michael Frolik

Frolik was taken 10th over all by the Florida Panthers in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft out of Rabat Kladno of the Czech league. After two years with Rimouski in the QMJHL, Frolik made his NHL debut on the second game of the 2008-2009 season. He tallied an impressive 21 goals en route to a 45 point rookie season. He followed that up with another 21 goals last season (43 points overall).

While the final numbers for Frolik look pretty good, they don’t tell the whole story. He has struggled mightily with consistency. Several times over his young career, he’s gone double digit game without putting the puck in the net (streaks of 11 and 16 games last season). Currently, he’s mired in a 22 game goalless drought going back to December 17 (in addition to an 11 game streak earlier this year). So far, he’s scored 8 goals to go with 20 assists.

Frolik is in the last year of his entry-level contract and is a restricted free agent at the end of the season. While the old adage is that guys play best in a contract year, that has not been the case for Frolik. The effort has been there night in and night out, but the results haven’t been. I can’t imagine anyone calling GM Dale Tallon for him by the deadline. As for the future with the club, maybe you sign him to a one/two year deal for a good price and hope one last time for a breakout from the soon-to-be 23 year old. Anything beyond that would be a stretch in my eyes, and probably not the best use of cap space.

Thank God Jacques Martin isn’t the GM anymore because he would give Frolik a 6 year contract for $3-4 million a year.

This can be a good “buy-low” opportunity for the Panthers where they can sign him for two years and then if he doesn’t work out they can try a “change of scenery” trade where one team trades a young player that is not developing for another team’s young player who might need a change.

Pierre Maguirre (sp?) just reported frolik is traded to chicago for jack skille

Looks like Jeff hit the nail pretty close to the head. Frolik traded for a guy who needs a change of scenery.

That is true about the change of scenery but I was ok with waiting a year or two. I guess the Panthers didn’t want to pay a potential $2-3 million a year for him and I can understand that.
