Rookie games under way, training camp officially beginning. Can you feel the excitement? It’s almost here kids. The start of the season. I can hardly wait. I had the chance last week to attend the first of two Florida Panthers rookie games, of which they lost both of, as well as the first open practice of training camp on Saturday.
While the Panthers have a lot of players in camp, there probably really aren’t too many open spots. Which isn’t saying too much when you examine the whole thing, but nonetheless, competition is expected. It will be intersting to see if anyone surprises us.
Here’s some of the stories from last week that you should get yourself caught up on:
In case you missed it, former Florida Panther defenceman Keith Ballard spoke out about his time here in Sunrise. Head coach Peter DeBoer responds to the Sun Sentinel regarding some of the story. Make your own decisions.
Yes he’s sick. Yes he’s on borrowed time. But make no mistake, Pat Burns is still with us! CBC Hockey reports on the false story.
From The Rink asks about Sheldon Souray and his “big” contract. Is he worth it?
It was announced this past week that the Ottawa Senators will be hosting the NHL All-Star game in 2012. Stay Classy has some ideas on how to have “fun” while in Canada’s capital.
When football season starts we all know that the NHL season is not far behind. Down Goes Brown has a guide for the hockey fan that compares it to the NFL.
Evgeni Malkin had a bit of an “off” year last season for Pittsburgh. Mike Colligan from The Hockey Writers tells us what went wrong and what can be expected this season.
The Calgary Flames make fans scratch their heads every year it seems. The Globe and Mail takes a look at the old and new of Calgary.
The Florida Panthers marketing geniuses have come up with some creative idiotic ticket gimmicks for this season. Well, apparently they aren’t the only team with crazy ideas. Puck Daddy reports on the St. Louis Blues latest try at getting more arse’s in seats.

Coming later this week will be my Western Conference preview as well as part two of finding Chris Higgins.
