Is The “Heat” Now On The Panthers?

Are The Panthers On The Hot Seat Now?

With the recent committment of three of the NBA’s most talented players to the Miami Heat, inlcuding King James himself, the Florida Panthers face the possibility of being buried in the media even further this season.  Even before the first puck has been dropped.  I’m not a fan of the NBA and in case you missed it, here’s my story from our NHL main page Too Many Men On The Site, on why.

Not taking anything away from all the good things that Dale Tallon has done so far, which he has done alot in his short time, the Panthers are almost faced with having to do something.  What that something is, I don’t know.  Yesterday I wrote about being patient, and that’s all we could do.  The fix has started, but it would take some time.

However with last night’s theatrics at the American Airlines Arena, the introducing of the Big Three, and the new slogan that the Heat was blasting everywhere, “We Can, We Will, We Did”, the competition for people’s attention and money, is now on!  More so than before.

The Panthers slogan of “We Came To Play”, that was obviously completed before Dale Tallon had anything to say about it, should be trashed, and a new one should be written.  Immediately if not sooner.

Healthy competiton between sports teams vying for fan attention is great when you have a loyal following, and you have competitive teams.  In the case of the Panthers thay have had neither.  The Heat, hoewver have a loyal following, they’ve competed hard, and they’ve won a championship in recent years.  And they have Pat Riley.  Who wouldn’t want to play for him?

So maybe, again, the patience attribute needs to be instilled in us.  Problem is, mine is running out.  When I see our other sports teams doing things like this, making moves that are not only popular, but the right moves, I cringe!

No offense Dale, you have a mess to clean and a culture to change, and it’s apparent that you can’t do it with a one-timer or even a good first pass.  It’s not your fault.  But I promise, if we don’t start off playing well and winning our games, our fan base for the season will be in the crapper!  Mind you and this is my personal opinion, the only way we can get better right now is by trade.  Our biggest chip is goaltender Tomas Vokoun.  Package him with one or two players and get that number one center we need.

This team needs an infusion of talent and skill. I know one player can’t do that, but it’s a start.  I’m not asking for Kovy.  We don’t have the complimentary players for him at this point.

Thoughts anyone?

Yes patience is difficult and their point total may very well be similar to last year, but we should be building more character and have a better TEAM unity.. Yes tough to sell seats with that, but it's something that's been lacking for far too long.. Build a solid foundation, get guys to play for the logo on the front instead of the name on the back...

One positive is that it should be a true character check for guys like Frolik, Olesz, Bernier, and Grabner,etc.. Either they buy in, or they'll also be shipped out. It's not just about the scoresheet, but adding something positive to the TEAM, whether it be a forecheck, backcheck, or grinding in the corners... eventually it'll pay off and it'll make you a better player and the stats will show it...

Tallon won't hang on to assets if they're not performing, like previous GMs here did in Horton, J-Bo, and Luongo.. He may not win all of his trades, but we trust his judge of talent, so we won't have to be caught up with the same cast of misfits for far too long...

Once free agency settles in, let's hope there's another trade or 2 before the season starts... As far as character guys left I wouldn't mind, let's start with Aaron Asham. He'd be similar to Colby Armstrong, and should be at least $1million cheaper... A guy like that could be brought in for like 3 years, as it's consistent leadership you're looking to have around for a while... Also if Philly can't afford Carcillo, I think he'd help add some grit on the 3rd line... He's even cleaned his game up somewhat, and adds a little offense here and there, a la Chris Neil..

Yes obviously numerous poor decisions over time.. Cohen seemed to trust Yormark too much, so everything seemed to revolove around trying to get into the playoffs, instead of REBUILDING....

My point is now the rebuild is on with Tallon, and fans here have no patience or don't understand how bad the whole ORGANIZATION is in that it needs a rebuild.. Many of these fans are the same fans that tried to justify keeping Horton... Sure Horton might have a chance to get back to be a 30 goal scorer, but he was always going to be the same loafy player HERE... And he's they type of guy that doesn't take young guys and say this is what needs to be done... Weiss either, but at least he's a CTR and plays some defense. With Horton, it's no leadership on or off the ice. He's a paycheck collector.

So it's one thing to want to see a winner, but everyone just seems to get caught up in seeing who has the most points out of the free agents available... Then they say, go sign Afinogenov, Zherdev, Tanguay, Frolov, etc.. I'm not just knocking those guys because they're soft, but you should only even CONSIDER adding those guys after you've already built your FOUNDATION... And Tallon's only still building it, as he's stuck with deadweight... So it takes time, but it's the necessary process.

Fans needs to understand this, and the fact it's also an ORGANIZATIONAL REBUILD... My only knock would be if our current scouting dept has what it takes, but hopefully a Director of Scouting is brought in to oversee this...

Right on the money. Knowing that patience is the key, people, fans will have to learn some. One of Tallon's trade marks is gettng players that are tough, yet not goons. Like Ben Eager for example. We most likely will stay away from foreign players that lack an edge.
The roster will be built with mostly north american skaters, which is fine with me.

Hard as it will be to do, this year most likely won't have too much improvement over last, at least on the scoresheet and in te standings. However, if the younger players are allowed to prove themselves and we gain some growth out of it, then that's a step in the right direction.
Just saying all in all, patience is hard. Ten years is a long time, but I have complete faith in Tallon's process.

Slapshot: I don't know if it's as much greed with the fans, although a winner would be nice. It's more poor decisions by ownership and management over the past few years. I agree as I've said since Tallon came here, that it will take time.
Patience, I'll have it as long as we are comptitive and he replaces the "Deadwood". Which he slowly is doing.
We can't trade players that teams don't want, and that's what is going to take time.

Like I said, the deals that Martin did were far worse than what Keenan did.

The problem with fans here is GREED. This is exactly what got the team in the Decade-Long Funk it's been in. Rebuilding takes time. You have to clean out the dead weight before you can move forward, and you can't clean it all out in 1 off-season...

Patience folks.. Too many negative posts that we don't have scoring. Year after year, always too many people foolishly thinking we're only a scorer or 2 away... No it's much more than that. That's what feeds the desperation, and the team really thinks they're that close to competing... Sorry, No quick fix..

Tallon's doing what he has to do. You have to be content that the 10 years without playoffs may end up being 11 or 12, but it's OK, as long as they're on the right path.. So if you want the Panthers to end up like the Clippers, keep hoping they spend big $$ on over-priced softies like Frolov, Zherdev, and Kovalchuk.. If you want to have a legitimate beef, ask Tallon why we couldn't get in on Buff, Burish, Versteeg or Armstrong... Then next year you go afer the bigger star, but that's also probably because Burkie and the Leafs are 1 year ahead of us in the Rebuild Process... Patience needed by many...

Hank, people think that Mike Keenan did so much damage with one trade (I don't), look at the problems we are left with from Uncle Jacquesass!
Bad contracts and platers no one wants.

Its gonna take time, but like I said, I'm getting impatient. This Heat thing just adds to it!

frank, the panthers are like cavs, noone wants to come here or play here just live here. You are so right about the heat. the cats won't get a sniff of pub.
