In a game that I was unable to watch yet alone listen to due to due to a business conference I was at, the Florida Panthers were blanked by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks last night 3-0. Tomas Vokoun had the roles reversed on him as Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller, with a new long term deal in hand, as well as a new backup (Vesa Toskala) shutout the listless Panthers. Well at least from what I read they were listless.
Hiller with the number one job firmly his, made 33 saves last night getting his second shutout of the season for Anaheim as they completed a 13 day road trip. Goals were scored for Anaheim by Ryan Getzlaf, Teemu Selanne, and Corey Perry, snapping the Panthers five game winning streak at home.
Head Coach for Florida Peter DeBoer commented that ” we didn’t win enough battles”, and that the Ducks were “hungrier than we were”. Also, “we didn’t do enough to score goals”. “We weren’t prepared to go out and grab a win”.
So, there you have it. As we continue to struggle for goals, the same mantra continues to be repeated. 9 goals in the last 8 games, and one of those goals came in a shootout. A very anemic offence to say the least, as they continue to let opportunities slip by. Sure it was their second game in a row and we could add that to the excuse list. But we have seen this “play” all to often. Get close, have a chance to get closer and then fall back. Same old story that’s getting tiring.
While the shots against were under 30 (25), the Panthers must have been playing as though they had cement in their skates. Time slipping, and games going by as well. Now the excuse will be that we’re waiting for Nathan Horton to come back. Oye!
There are a couple poignant phrases that come to mind:
1) There are two kinds of people, those that wait for things to happen, and those that make things happen.
2) Playing tense is dibilitating. Playing with intensity is energizing.
With three days off before the Flames come to town, the Panthers and the organization can mull those over for a few days. (thanks to my high school daughter for the word mull, as I could not think of it, I’m so tired).
Meanwhile as I type this the Leafs newly acquired defenceman Dion Phanuef just layed a big hit on New Jersey’s Zach Parise and fought New Jersey’s Colin White. This after newly acquired Leaf forward Freddie Sjostrom just scored the first goal of the game.
Need I say more?
Thanks for reading.
