Sorry for the lateness of this post as it’s been a busy Sunday, and I’ve got little to say about Saturday night’s rematch between the Panthers and the Hurricanes. So I’ll be brief.
After convincingly beating Carolina Friday night in Florida, the Panthers had hoped to sweep the NHL dormat and collect all four available points. Unfortunately it took the Panthers about forty minutes to find their hands, arms, arse, legs when Shawn Matthias banged home a goal on a dump in that Carolina goalie Cam Ward misplayed. Stevie Wonder scored at the 12 minute mark of the third to make it close (delusional) as the Panthers appeared to finally have some life.
They came out flat, disinterested, and let Carolina control the game from start to finish. Not at all what was expected after Friday night’s victory. The weekend basically was a wash.
Patrick Dwyer now has scored 2 of his 3 NHL goals against Florida as he is attempting to become the new Panther killer, got the scoring started for Carolina in the first. Former Panther Matt Cullen added a shortie on a gaffe by former Hurricane defenceman Dennis Seidenberg, and Sergei Samsonov added the ultimate game winner in the second which gave Carolina a cushy 3-0 lead.
Not much else to say really about this one as it was a game that Florida should have won. I know the schedule has been a real bitch, there are some injuries, and they played the night before, blah, blah, blah. Carolina also played the night before and had the same travel issues the Panthers did, has injuries, but also sport the NHL’s worst record. Good teams win these types of games. That is my point.
Did I mention a brief 5 on 3 that the Panthers had in the third? Nonetheless, it didn’t matter as they couldn’t muster much/any offence. They continue to frustrate me and in the event you missed it I ran a brief storyline on this Friday. Here is the link to it again.
Next up is Philly Monday night. Mike Richards most likely has a target on his front, side, back due to the hit on David Booth. Booth remains out with a concussion since the end of October, and has just started skating and could return sometime in January. Maybe.
The Panthers have recalled both Steve MacIntyre and Mike Duco for the Flyer game as the Panthers won’t be intimdated this time. NHL officials and Colin Campbell should pay special attention to this one. It might get ugly. Or will the Cats end up playing like kittens?
We’ll see. In the meantime this team is The Most Frustrating Team in the NHL.
One final note, rookie defenceman Dmitry Kulikov could be out with what is looking like a significant knee injury from Friday’s game against the Canes. Not many details other than something with his MCL, and that surgery isn’t expected at this time. More on his condition later. Another injury to deal with and the first one on the defensive unit meaning that Jason Garrison’s playing time will increase and its possible that Keaton Ellerby will be making his NHL debut sometime soon.
By the way both Garrison and Ellerby shoot lefthanded!
Thanks for reading.
