While I was not able to watch the game due to a high school football homecoming game, I was gettng the updates on my blackberry. I thought it would be a long night when the first message was Weiss turns puck over, Asham scores. Flyers 1 Cats 0.
The first period ended with the Flyers leading 1-0. During intermission head Coach Peter Deboer gave the Panthers a much needed tongue lashing and they responded. Little Stevie redeemed himself and got one back as he shot through traffic and beat Ray Emery to tie things up at one. Then Claude Giroux gave the Flyers the lead back. Then about six minutes later Nathan Horton responded with 54 seconds left. Tied at 2 after 2.
The tide was moving the Panthers way. After a horrible start and terrible first period they had changed their ways. But things got a bit nervous as David Booth took a tripping penalty putting the Flyers back on the power play. But no fear, as short handed specialist, Rat Attack Dvorak (thanks to Randy Moeller, Panthers radio announcer for that one), scored his second goal of the year. Both goals this year for Radek Dvorak have been shorthanded and he also set the franchise record for shorties as this was his 14th.
The Panthers fought off the Flyers for the balance of the game and hung on to win with Steven Reinprecht getting an empty netter to officially ice the game. Scott Clemmensen stopped 25 of 27 shots in his first start as the Panthers finally held a team to under 30 shots on goal. Which goalie goes next? If you go with the hot hand, then it’s Clemmensen. We’ve got 5 days to ponder on this one.
Keys to this victory: Deboer Bitching the boys out! Gregory Campbell fights Daniel Carcillo to spark the team. Short handed goal by “Rat Attack Dvorak” (not sure if I like that yet, but, we’ll go with it).
Next game for Florida is at home Wednesday night against the Buffalo Sabres. That’s enough time to build on a victory and be ready to continue a new streak.
